Despite the computer tricks, not all of the vermin in the movie are virtual. In one scene, O'Connell sits down to a bowl of cereal and accidentally spoons himself a few of his six-legged buddies. "They were using rubber ones," he recalls. "Then one of the crew yelled, `Use the real ones! What're you, chicken?' " The taunting worked, and O'Connell opened wide. For the few seconds before he spit them out, he says, "I could feel their antennae on the roof of my mouth. It was kinda gross--but these are high-bred, clean-living, Hollywood roaches. They weren't exactly pulling them out of the subway!" As a New Yorker, of course, he'd know the difference.
